A steady presence at the top of tennis
Todd Christopher Martin rose through American college tennis at Northwestern before becoming a fixture on the ATP Tour. He reached the final of the Australian Open in 1994 and the US Open in 1999, and was a member of the U.S. Davis Cup-winning team in 1995. His career combined a powerful serve-and-volley game with a reputation for consistency and sportsmanship. [1][2]
From player to steward of the sport
Martin’s contributions continued after his playing years. He established the Todd Martin Development Fund in Lansing in 1994 to support young people through tennis and leadership programming. He later took on leadership responsibilities in professional tennis, including serving as president of the ATP Player Council, and the International Tennis Hall of Fame named him CEO-designate in 2014. Those roles reflect a long relationship with the sport that included competition, athlete representation and institutional leadership. [1][2]
Finals, titles and national service
Martin reached the Australian Open singles final in 1994 and the US Open final in 1999, and his ATP career includes eight singles titles. He represented the United States in Davis Cup, contributing to the 1995 winning team.
