A restaurant idea tested the hard way

Todd Graves developed the Raising Cane’s concept while studying restaurant management at Louisiana State University. After his plan for a chicken-finger restaurant was rejected by lenders and received a poor class evaluation, he worked industrial and commercial fishing jobs to raise startup money. Raising Cane’s opened its first restaurant near LSU in 1996. The company’s official history describes a founder who took on practical work during construction and opening, rather than treating the concept as a paper exercise. [1]

Building around one central product

The brand’s “ONE LOVE” framing reflects Graves’s commitment to a limited menu built around chicken fingers, sides and sauce. Its first restaurant was named for Graves’s Labrador, Raising Cane. The company describes its growth as founder-led and highlights Graves’s continuing role in the business. He has also appeared as a guest investor on Shark Tank and created the Restaurant Recovery series. This profile refers to the restaurant founder; the name is shared by other people, including a lawyer. [1][2]

The original restaurant and its name

The first Raising Cane’s opened near LSU’s North Gates on August 28, 1996. The company’s history says Graves originally considered the name Sockeye’s after his Alaska fishing work, then chose Raising Cane after his Labrador, who often visited the construction site. Those details became part of the brand’s own origin story and show how the founder’s earlier jobs, campus setting and personal life entered the restaurant identity. [1]
